Situated a stone’s throw from our sites, Medmerry is a ‘wild and wonderful’ reserve, offering long walks and cycle rides through an amazing landscape of panoramic views and glorious sunsets. The result of one of Europe’s largest managed realignment schemes, Medmerry is linked by public footpath’s to neighbouring Pagham Harbour and the beautiful beaches of The Witterings.
Selsey has long been a tourist destination for those seeking time away by the sea and being on a ‘point’ you are never too far from the beach for leisurely walks and to watch the fabulous sunsets. Its also a working beach and there are lovely places to watch the fishing fleets coming in, bringing a range of fish and the well renowned Selsey Crab. The Lifeboat Station is open for visitors in the summer and it is well worth a visit to Church Norton with its picturesque harbour walk and its 13th Century Chapel, St Wilfreds. It is also just a short car journey to West Wittering, one of the best beaches in the country with blue flag beach, cafe, lifeguards, watersport centre and East Head Nature Reserve.
Chichester has a long history as a settlement from Roman times. It is has a 12th-century cathedral. The city is a hub of several main road routes, and has a railway station, bus station and hospital. It also offers a good choice of restaurants, a cinema, shopping and a Farmer’s Market in the centre of the city, every Wednesday. For those wanting a bit of culture, Chichester is home to the internationally-renowned Festival Theatre, and in 2012, the newly built Chichester District Museum called The Novium opened, which is situated a stone’s throw from Chichester Cathedral. The Pallant House Gallery and other smaller galleries are also situated in the city centre.
Is not just home to a fantastic stately home and grounds, but also has a Motor Racing Circuit, hosting the annual Revival and Festival of Speed events. The World renowned Horse Racing calendar runs from May through to October each year. There are also two golf courses, a member’s only club, a country club with spa, and restaurants situated on the vast grounds on the edge of the Southdowns.
Stop anywhere in the South Downs and it is hard not to find an inspiring view. There are stunning, panoramic views to the sea and across the weald along the 100 mile length of the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne. The South Downs is an area of inspirational beauty that can lift the soul. Kingley Vale is a popular visitors point from Selsey and parking is easy at West Stoke Car Park. The reserve here contains one of the finest yew forests in western Europe, including a grove of ancient trees which are among the oldest living things in Britain. Kingley Vale also has superb chalk grassland and is one of the most important archaeological sites in southern England, with 14 scheduled ancient monuments.
Portsmouth Historic Dockland is approximately half an hours drive from Selsey and well worth a visit to just wander around the docklands, or visit one of the many attractions: The Mary Rose, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, Harbour Tours, The Royal Naval Museum to name a few. It is next door to Gun Wharf Quays which has an abundance of places to eat (many on the waterfront) and is home to the South coasts leading designer shopping outlet (with over 90 famous brands with up to 60% off all day, every day).
Southsea has a promenade walk along the front, with restaurants and cafes and this is where the hovercraft departs to The Isle of Wight.
Goodwood: There is a member’s only course at Goodwood, but also a course which is open to the public, as well as to Members. The easy walking 6,650 yard course which meanders through woodland and tree lined fairways to closely guarded greens, demands accuracy, rather than brute force!
Chichester Golf Club: This club has three courses, including a ‘pay as you go’ par 3 course. It also has a driving range and is a short drive from Selsey, situated at Hunston, on the road to Chichester.
Selsey Golf Club: With incredible views of the Downs as a back drop, and situated next to the coast, Selsey GC boasts a truly beautiful & testing 9-hole links-type course. With Dual-Tee positions on every hole, the golf course is home to 2 of the most difficult Par 4’s anywhere in the County of Sussex. Holes 4 & 5, even if it’s played with the wind, will test even the most skilled of golfer every single time. It has a clubhouse, with bar and restaurant.
